TRIPLEX 2024 Barossa Mataro 6-pack
$300.00
For this edition, Barossa Viticulturist of the Year, Marcus Schulz, joined forces with Barossa Winemaker of the Year, Marie Clay, to tell the story of Mataro from the distinctive 2024 vintage
The Vintage
Lack of rainfall in Winter and Spring in 2023 led to an early vine budburst season in September. These dry conditions led to cool and frosty nights, damaging the new vine shoots and reducing the yields for harvest. February, March and April remained dry with more than 50 days without rain. A heatwave in March reduced the ripening period and most vineyards were picked before Easter.
Although the yields were reduced by up to 60% in same areas of the Barossa, the quality of the fruit overall was exceptional, with Mataro one of the standout varieties.
The Viticulturist & the Vineyard
Marcus is the fifth generation of the Schulz family to grow grapes on their Ebenezer properties. He left school at 14 years of age to return to Ebenezer. Now after more than more than 60 years as a Northern Barossa vigneron, Marcus has seen all the possible variations of vintage but to him, itโs always about learning and how to apply what he has learnt. He is firmly focused on the quality of the grapes he grows and the health of his vineyards, which are now certified Organic, Sustainable and Biodynamic.
The Winemaker & the Winemaking
Marie is Senior Winemaker at Treasury Wine Estate. She is passionate about the Barossa and the diversity of wine styles, subregional nuances, and expression of place that this great region offers.
The grapes for this wine were hand-picked on April 9th from Marcus Schulzโs Primrose vineyard in Ebenezer, this medium-bodied Mataro was crafted to express the beauty of site in a contemporary, perfumed Barossa style. Fruit was berry sorted and cold soaked before whole berry fermentation with gentle cap management in small open-top fermenters. A portion (10%) of whole clusters underwent carbonic maceration, included at pressing. The wine was matured for 8 months in seasoned French oak hogheads on full yeast lees to build texture and bottled in December 2024 to capture freshness and varietal expression.
