For this edition, Barossa Viticulturist of the Year, Amanda Mader and Barossa Winemaker of the Year, Matthew Pellew have crafted a superb Cabernet Sauvignon from the renowned 2022 vintage.

“Deep ruby red in colour with great depth and intensity. Inviting aromas of cinnamon spice and vibrant cranberry lift intertwined with typical Cabernet blackcurrant. Notes of cherry, leather and liquorice add depth, while spearmint and vanilla oak contribute elegance. A hint of tomato leaf and tobacco provide intriguing complexity to a wine that displays an abundance of character. The wine offers rich mid-palate weight, luscious blackcurrant flavours and a touch of cranberry chocolate. Mid-strength tannins lend a velvety texture supporting a long length on the finish. Woody spice and lingering liquorice flavours round out the palate. I believe this wine exemplifies the essence of Barossa Valley Cabernet, with its layered aromas and flavours, being a true expression of its unique Barossa terroir.”

The Vintage
Vintage 2022 was a renowned year with solid wines and good yields. Growing season rainfall was excellent with mild temperatures providing ideal growing conditions. Vintage weather remained mild with generally perfect mid-20s weather combined with cool nights ensuring steady even ripening.
The Viticulturist & the Vineyard
Amanda Mader is well known and respected among the region’s grape grower community. She works on numerous committees and freely shares her time and knowledge with all. Operating her own consultancy, Vine Scout, Mandy works across the region, giving her an in-depth knowledge of the vineyards in both Barossa and Eden Valleys.
“Planted in 1976 on own roots, this Cabernet Sauvignon parcel of longevity, situated in the Gumpara Vineyards of Light Pass is charted as ‘Barossa Old Vine’. Over decades, vines have been carefully transformed by James and Mark Mader from T-Trellis to Cane to Detail Spur Positioning. These are vines of deep root structure encased in loam and limestone, that connect trunks with an intricate transport system produce consistently small bunches with tiny berries of exploding flavours. Following a 2022 mild summer, along with February rainfall, the fruit eased into a long ripening period which stole the heart of Winemaker Matt Pellew. A meticulous man who expressed patience with a smile, admirably selected the optimal time for an intense flavour ripe harvest occurring April 6th 2022.”

The Winemaker & the Winemaking
Matt has had a winemaking career that spans more than 3 decades, with the last 20 years in the Barossa. The winemaker for Burge Barossa, he is certainly a quiet high achiever with a strong passion for traditional Barossa wine styles. It is this passion for the region, combined with a dedication to quality, that earned him the 2022 Winemaker of the Year.
“Harvested on April 6, 2022, the grapes were traditionally destemmed without crushing to maintain some whole berries in the ferment and transferred, via a chiller at 12°C, to a small 2-tonne open fermenter. After acid adjustment the grapes were left to macerate for 36 hours and warm up naturally then inoculated with a selected blend of two yeast strains: Lachancea thermotolerans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. During fermentation, the grapes were hand-plunged over an 11-day period. After fermentation, the skins were left to macerate for a further 5 days, before being gently basket-pressed and filled into French oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation was completed in June 2022, after which the wine was adjusted in barrel, and remained on its lees until October 2022. After racking, the wine was returned to oak for a further 14 months of maturation. Finally, after its full 21 months in oak, the wine was bottled in February 2024. This wine has evolved into a complex and enchanting expression of Barossa Cabernet.”

Deep crimson. Powerful nose of cedar, blackcurrant, cigar box. Big, full-bodied and muscular, showing depth of blackcurrant, blackberry underpinned by plentiful grainy tannins. Ample and generous, leading to a long finish. Drink now–2032 14.5% alc. 93 points.
